Community Project
For our community project the Opal and Amethyst Learning Zones have joined forces. Working together we have made links with Cross Hill Nursing home. We are aiming to create and sustain strong community links whilst providing the children with added life skills. We have planned to visit the Nursing home every half-term with a different focus each time.
The benefits of this project include:
- Children visiting a different environment
- Children gaining respect for the elderly
- Children having more exposure to language
- Increased understanding of empathy
We will provide regular updates on the website over the academic year. Stay tuned for our first visit.
Superpowers in Action!
Showing progress with our independence – In September the children were introduced to our Superpower of Independence. Over the half-term the children have shown a massive growth with this skill. The way the children now access the provision is great evidence to their progress. Last week, the children were understanding senses which led us to completing a taste test. The children’s attitude to learning oozed independence again showing their confidence when accessing activities.
Opal Learning Zone Stay and Play – Last week the Opal Learning Zone hosted its first Stay and Play of the academic year. Parents and carers had the opportunity to take part in a Phonics lesson before exploring around the EYFS Unit. The sessions were a definite success and we are now in the process of planning next half-terms parent engagement opportunity. Thank you to all that came, your feedback was greatly appreciated.
Welcoming in Our January Starters – We have had an amazing start to the new year with the arrival of new starters in the Opal Learning Zone. The existing children have modelled their Superpower of independence perfectly to the children as displayed in the Foundations for Phonics lesson in the pictures. The children have settled into the routines and expectations and we know they will thrive in their new environment.
Awards
Pupils grow, learn and thrive within the positive, nurturing learning environment at Stanhope Barrington C of E Primary School. Celebrating success and effort is an important part of creating a positive and reflective school community and links to our core Christian values (KFC).
In the Opal Learning Zone, award certificates are given weekly and include: The Ambassador Award (awarded to the pupil that stands out for demonstrating a skill linked to the Superpower), the Dojo Award (awarded to the pupil that has made the most consistent effort during the week) and the Extra Special Award (awarded to the pupil that has stood out for the right reasons such as showing kindness, academic effort and persistence). In addition, every pupil across the Learning Zones is also eligible for whole school awards. Please visit our Celebrating Success section to find out more and to see the weekly winners of each award.

Superpowers in Action!
Weardale Adventure Centre – Hi-Ho-Hi-Ho it’s off to the Adventure Centre we go! This half-term has seen the Opal Learning Zone venture to the Weardale Adventure Centre to test our Superpower of independence. The children were put through their paces as they had to complete a number of activities. The children showed excellent resilience and independence skills as they accessed an animal finding activity and managed their way through a nightline. The staff at the adventure centre commented on how well the children accessed the day, and were shocked at how independent they were.
Building Independence Skills – During the Autumn term the Opal Learning Zone have been challenged to make good progress with their superpower of independence. The children have been challenged to put on their own coats independently which proved tricky initially at the start of the year. However, with perseverance all of the children have made excellent progress. Some children have even mastered their coats and are able to put on the dressing up clothes without support. We will now move on to zipping up our own coats and master recognising our names.
Gem Power Treat Afternoon – This afternoon the Opal Learning Zone celebrated achieving their gem powers accompanying Amethyst with a trip to Freddie’s Fish Shop and a stop off at Riverside Park. Each time a child displays our superpower of independence they are able to place a gem in the jar. When this jar is full we then have the opportunity to enjoy a treat afternoon. Today we visited Gillian at the Fish Shop, who very kindly allowed us to see the inside of the shop and even help serve. Following this, we continued our walk to the river where we enjoyed our feast. We finished off a wonderful afternoon with a visit to the park. The feedback from Gillian and the community was exceptional, all commented on how well the children behaved and their brilliant manners!
