That was the message from Eco Club recently. There is much more to Eco Club than weeding and the children love it all. During this half term the children have planted flowers, planted bulbs in pots and enjoyed weeding. They have grown onions, which have been used in their homes to make soups, stews and bolognaise.
Towards the end of the summer term, they grew potatoes, entering into a competitive spirit to find out whose potato was the heaviest. The potatoes were grown from seed potatoes and the children planted one each. Every week they were diligently watered and looked after. The winning potato weighed 157g and was nurtured by Tom.
The children all enjoy helping out, looking after the school plants and weeding. They are certainly kept busy around the school every Thursday in the herb garden, raised beds, boulder garden, orchard and bee/butterfly garden.
Some of the children’s favourite activities when they come along to Eco Club are:
- Using shovels and digging
- Gardening and planting
- Looking after the school
- And of course, weeding!
As the days turn shorter and the weather changes, the children take a break from their weekly Eco Club activities. Then, like the weeds, they will return in the spring term so be sure to look out for their shoots!
