This week our children have been learning about various different aspects of War. Our youngest children in EYFS have been learning about the importance of Remembrance Day and have learnt a really moving poem. Parents can see this in action on Tapestry. In Class 1 the children have been learning about evacuation and have planned what they would need to pack in a suitcase. Class 2 have completed some very interesting work on how people in Britain kept themselves safe during an air raid. While learning about the outbreak of WWII, the children in Class 3 have completed some lovely activities all about life on the Home Front. Class 4 have had a very exciting week learning about the Battle of Britain and the role the Spitfire and Hurricane played in keeping British skies safe. In Class 5 the focus of War Week was on the 75th Anniversary of the Holocaust. The children were moved and inspired by the work they completed on The Diary of Anne Frank.
On Friday 13th November (at the end of War Week) all classes came together virtually via Teams to share with each other what they had learnt. It was lovely to see the children interact with friends they haven’t been able to see or be with for some time.
In addition, on Wednesday 11th November, the whole school observed two minutes silence along with the rest of the country to remember those who gave so much for our freedom. Also on 11th November each and every child laid a knitted poppy on our Remembrance Cross laid out on the bank on the school field. This created a very visual focal point for the school to show their respects to all service personnel.
During the BBC’s coverage on Remembrance Sunday I was very touched and humbled to hear an ex-serviceman’s response when he was asked how he was coping with the Covid Lockdown. He replied that he wasn’t ‘locked down’ because his mind was free and therefore he could take his mind wherever he wanted and that this freedom was what he and his comrades fought and died for.
We have all had a fantastic week in school – one we will all remember.
