The fourth candle of Advent

The fourth candle of Advent, also purple, represents PEACE and is also known as the “Angel’s Candle”. It reminds us of the message of the angels: “Peace on Earth, Good Will Toward Men.”

When we think of the idea of PEACE, we tend to think of words like tranquility, calm, contentment and serenity–all wonderful synonyms for what most of seek as a break from our busy lifestyles (especially at Christmastime!)–but I wonder, as we light the fourth candle, if PEACE is more than tranquility and contentment. I wonder if PEACE is about finding harmony with one another and seeking ways to connect with the goodness in ourselves, each other and our wider community. This Christmas, what does PEACE mean to you and what are ways to that you can practice PEACE during the Christmas season and in the year ahead?

Silent night! Holy night!
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon virgin mother and child!
Holy infant, so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace!
Sleep in heavenly peace!

Silent night! Holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight!
Glories stream from heaven afar,
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia!
Christ the Saviour is born!
Christ the Saviour is born!

Silent night! Holy night!
Son of God, love’s pure light
Radiant beams from thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth!
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth!
