World Book Day is a celebration! It’s a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and (most importantly) it’s a celebration of reading. In fact, it’s the biggest celebration of its kind, designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and marked in over 100 countries all over the world.
This is the 20th year there’s been a World Book Day, and on 2nd March 2017 children of all ages came together to appreciate reading – very loudly and very happily. The main aim of World Book Day in the UK and Ireland is to encourage children to explore the pleasures of books and reading by providing them with the opportunity to have a book of their own.
In school, our children dressed up as their favourite character. There was lots of fun and reading throughout the day. Every child brought home a £1 voucher which can be used towards the cost of a book or used to purchase a book written for World Book Day, e.g. Blob, written by David Walliams.
An extra celebration this year marks the 60th anniversary of Cat in the Hat from the iconic Dr.Seuss which was first published in 1957…
“When Sally and her brother are left alone, they think they’re in for a dull day – until the Cat in the Hat steps in on the mat, bringing with him mayhem and madness! Ignoring repeated objections from the children’s fish, the Cat shows the children a few of his tricks in an attempt to entertain them. In the process he and his companions, Thing One and Thing Two, wreck the house. The children and the fish become more and more alarmed until the Cat produces a machine that he uses to clean everything up. He then says his goodbyes and disappears just before the children’s mother walks in.”
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn the more places you’ll go.” Dr.Seuss
