Our current Year 4&5 children will be taking part in The Spainsfield Project next year and as part of this project they visited Beamish Museum on Thursday 14th July to take part in The Festival of The 1950’s.
We started by playing a 1950’s game of football, led by two ex-England players who played in the 1950’s. We then visited a marquee which had fascinating artefacts from the 1950’s from fashion and art to household appliances and a doctor’s surgery!
The children then took part in a bowls competition before we had a lovely picnic in the grounds. After lunch we did a science experiment which involved filtering dirty water to make it safe enough to drink. Following a quick visit to the sweet shop we visited the farmhouse where the children were put to work. One group helped the farmer’s wife to bake bread whilst the rest helped the landgirls to tidy the garden and paths ready for an inspection by the Ministry of Agriculture.
We then caught the tram and ended our day at Pockerley Manor House.
The children had a fantastic day and learnt a lot about life in the 1950’s and 1940’s. This will stand them in good stead for our creative curriculum theme in September which will be ‘The Decades’.
