The evenings are drawing in, the fallen leaves scatter the ground like a red and yellow mosaic, and in the mornings the rooftops are white with frost. It is autumn. It is the season of Halloween, Bonfire Night and Remembrance. The kids have donned their costumes for the disco, for parties and trick or treating and they are still enjoying their collected sweets. Soon it will be time to light the bonfires and set off fireworks to commemorate the events of 5 November 1605. In 1605, Guy Fawkes, a member of the Gunpowder Plot, was arrested while guarding the explosives the plotters had placed beneath the House of Lords. Celebrating the fact that King James I had survived the attempt on his life, people lit bonfires around London, and months later the introduction of the Observance of 5th November Act enforced an annual public day of thanksgiving for the plot’s failure. Then, after the popping and the loud booms have been silenced, it will be Remembrance Day. The act of remembrance is a time to reflect on the enormous sacrifice of the men and women of the Armed Forces (and their families) have made in times of war and conflict. The school’s Remembrance Service will be held in the garden at 10:45 am on Friday, 6 November 2015. So, pin on your poppies and please join us to remember their sacrifice and service….
Happy Autumn!
