Class 3 is comprised of Year 5 and Year 6 children working at Key Stage 2 (KS2).

Here is what we have been doing…
Class 3 take part in the North Pennines AONB’s Cold-blooded and Spineless Project
On Monday, 16 July 2018 Class 3 took part in the North Pennines AONB’s Cold-blooded and Spineless Project. The class have been pond dipping at the Quarry, they have gone on a bug walk and have learned about habitats for invertebrates in the North Pennines. They have discovered rare species and have constructed bug hotels, bee posts and lacewing houses for the Durham Dales Centre Garden, opening 22 September 2018. Despite the soggy weather, everyone enjoyed their day learning about these unique species.
Year 6 at Durham Cathedral
On Thursday 14th June 2018 our Year 6 children visited Durham and attended the Leavers’ Service at the Cathedral. They travelled to Durham in the morning and spent some time shopping. The boys went with Mr Myers and visited shops such as Smiggles, JD sports and the indoor market. At the same time the girls shopped till they dropped with Mrs Parvin. They visited Smiggles, Superdrug and clothes shops.
Following a picnic lunch outside of the Cathedral, our thirteen leavers took part in a carousel of Prayer Space activities within the Cathedral which was based on their memories and feelings about moving on.
The school banner was carried by Tom, Harry, Jack, Grace, Daisy and Leah.
They all had a fantastic time and were (as always) a real credit to our school.
Class 3 at the Ceilidh
On Monday 11th June 2018, Class 3 (along with the rest of the school) took part in a Ceilidh. It was very fast paced and the children had to remember some very complicated steps. Mr Myers joined in and was exhausted by the end of the session! There were lots of very red faces and tired bodies at the end. The co-ordinator explained how football clubs are now including dance and ceilidh moves in their training because you have to be very very fit to dance a ceilidh! This was a challenge and our school football team took it very seriously!
The event was funded through our Sports Premium Funding and allows children to experience a range of different sports and different activities.
Same But Different Art Project
Class 3 are taking part in an exciting art project called ‘Same But Different’. The project involves them working with specialists across the arts including: sculptors, actors, dancers and musicians. This is a unique opportunity provided by Durham County Council.
On Thursday 24th May the children visited Hamsterly Forest Visitors Centre and were shown an exhibition of sculptures called The P’s. They then created images using environmental art techniques. The sculptor then returned to school with the children and ran a workshop in school where the children created their own sculptures.
Coming up over the next few weeks, the children will also be taking part in drama, dance and music workshops.
After SATs Party
On Friday 18th May 2018, Class 3 celebrated the end of SATs week with a party. Children came in non-uniform and brought mountains of food! They could choose to do whatever they wanted all day as a treat for all of their hard work in preparation for their SATs. The rest of their class mates celebrated with them.
Every child has worked so hard and we are incredibly proud of every single one of them regardless of their results. Well done Year 6!
Highlights Rural Crafts
Last week, on 8th and 9th of November 2017, Stu Langley came into school to work with Class 3 as part of the Highlights Rural Crafts programme. Stu is a glass artist and works with stained glass, neon and produces installations for lighting events around the country. Initially the children designed pictures which were illuminated. They then made pictures out of copper and led bulbs which lit up using small batteries. Stu explained to the children how electricity is used in art work which tied in nicely with our science unit in the national curriculum. The children’s work will be exhibited in St. Thomas’ Church Hall on Friday 17th November and for the exhibition they made neon signs which were incredibly. Finally, we made a display in the classroom of some stained glass art work produced by the children. This was an amazing opportunity for the children to work with materials and resources which they wouldn’t normally have access to. In addition, Stu talked to the children about life as an artist and how he followed his dreams and achieved his goals. This was an inspirational workshop which we were delighted to be a part of.
Healthy Heart Workshop
On Monday 6th November 2017, Elaine Griffiths (School Nurse), came into school to work with Class 3. She delivered a Healthy Hearts Workshop to complement our science unit of ‘Animals Including Humans’. The children learnt how the heart works and what we do can affect how healthy our hearts are. They learnt about the effects of alcohol, smoking, drugs, healthy eating and exercise and how these impact on our heart in a positive and negative way. The children thoroughly enjoyed see examples of arteries blocked with fat and how much tar is produced in the lungs from smoking.
This was a great, practical workshop which reinforced the information learnt in our science unit.
Halloween 2017
On Tuesday 31st October 2017, Class 3 spent a spooky day celebrating Halloween! The children dressed in some amazing costumes and their faces were painted very artistically.
We spent the day: completing a Halloween comprehension, working as a team to solve some Halloween challenges, eating our delicious creepy lunch and having a great time at the Halloween Disco!
Judo Taster Sessions
On Friday 20th October 2017, Hannah Lewis (an Olympic Athlete on the GBR Judo Team) visited our school. She taught Judo taster sessions for all children from EYFS up to year 6. The children had a fantastic time learning the three basic skills needed for Judo training. It was a unique opportunity for our children to meet and talk to an Olympic Athlete who was born and bred in the North East of England. The children loved every minute of their training and they all took a leaflet home, detailing local Judo clubs.
Play In A Day: Grecian 2000!
On Wednesday 12th October 2017, Class 3 had a fantastic time working with Lisa from the Lynx Theatre on Play In A Day.
The play linked to our history theme of Ancient Greece and the children learnt lots of interesting facts about Greek myths. The children used skills such as team work, resilience, confidence and support to plan, rehearse and deliver the play. The hall was packed with parents, children and other members of our school community. It was a brilliant production and thank you to everyone who came to support our children.
First Aid Training by Northumbria Police
On Thursday 5th October 2017, Class 3 took part in a First Aid Training Workshop led by our local Tri-Responders Ross and Laura.
They learnt how to deal with an emergency, how to help someone who is choking and how to put someone in the recover position. The children were very impressive and learnt lots of life skills in this session.
Laura and Ross will be back soon for the follow-on workshop which will teach the children CPR and how to use a defibrillator.
