This week Mark Rowley, a renowned leather artist from the Upper Dale, worked with Class 3 to produce a piece of artwork in leather. The class spent two days creating art based on the theme of ‘The Garden’. Children drew designs and then transferred them onto a piece of hide. They then learnt how to use a range of different tools to imprint their design onto the leather. Mark was extremely impressed with the artwork which will be exhibited on Friday 23rd October in St. Thomas’ Church Hall between 10am and 4pm.
Taking part in the Highlights Rural Craft project gives our children the opportunity to experience traditional arts and crafts, work with different media and to learn how to use tools which they would otherwise not experience until later in their school life. Working with a ‘real’ artist also gives children aspiration and determination to pursue their own skills.
