A Celebration of Music

On Tuesday 7th February 2017 we held our annual celebration of music event in St. Thomas’ Church. As always, the event was well attended by parents, relatives and members of our church community. We began with a journey into outer-space with Reception singing songs about their topic ‘Space’. We were treated to a fantastic African drumming session by Class 2 who played a range of beats on the jembe drums. We were very impressed with some members of the class who had the confidence to lead the drumming and make up their own rhythm for the rest of the class to copy. Class 3 played their recorders beautifully, accompanied by Class 2. It was marvellous to hear over 60 children completely in time and in tune with each other!

What was particularly special about this event was that Miss Casewell and Mrs Millar (our brass and violin teachers) were able to join Ms Hughes at the event. The brass section (Daisy, Phoebe, Madison and Liam) played a couple of tunes which were very impressive. Three of our youngest children in KS2 (Chloe, Priya and Aimee) played two tunes on the violin which they have only been playing since September. Elizabeth – who has been playing violin for a couple of years – played a beautiful piece of music by Beethoven.

Perhaps the most spectacular section of the event was when Bonnie performed her clog dancing routine, accompanied by mum and dad on their instruments. You could hear a penny drop as every pair of eyes were mesmerised by Bonnie’s performance. She deservedly received cheers, claps and whoops of joy afterwards – a marvellous performance from Bonnie who had the confidence to perform alone in front of a huge audience.

This musical event allowed us to showcase the range of skills our children learn in music lessons and also allowed the audience to see the progression in terms of skills and confidence. It was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon!
